While the Windows Phone 7 has had a small appeal to smartphone users, Microsoft has just unveiled the next version of the phone’s software, which they named Mango. The version includes 500 new features, including smoother integration and use with social networking programs, built-in voice-to-text and text-to-voice support for hands-free use, and multi tasking allowing for more than one application to run while the other is working in the background. Mango will be available this fall.
Andy Lees, president of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft, says the company set out to make the smartphone smarter and easier. Microsoft held a news conference in NYC Tuesday morning. The company also announced other features at today’s news conference, including a version of Internet Explorer 9 for the phone and a program called Local Scout offering hyper-local search results and offers nearby destinations for shopping and dining out. Quick Cards is another new feature and gives a summary of relevant information and related apps when users search for a movie, event or product.
